was out with my son, his wonderful wife and two adorable children the other evening. We were having a meal at a nice, but not overly exclusive, restaurant.
It was a wonderful evening that was enjoyed by all and..the best bit? I wasn’t paying!
Anyway, I am digressing from my story...
While we were eating, a young married couple entered and they were shown to their table. Other than looking at them enter and noticing what a happy, good-looking couple they were I didn’t think I was paying them any attention. Turns out I was wrong. I was paying a lot of attention to them, and over our coffee it hit me why I was subconsciously doing it.
The whole time they were in the restaurant they were doing something wrong. Something that so many young people today seem to do.
As opposed to looking at each other and making conversation. They were looking at their phones!
I wanted to get up, go over and tell them straight. “You are meant to be in love! What about a bit of romance?” I’m not talking about some grand gesture; there was no need to hire a violin player to serenade them over dinner. But a bit of eye contact and conversation surely that isn’t too much to ask.
If I were a young girl today that is what I would want. I certainly wouldn’t want a life where I was staring a little screen for most of the day.
This is probably one of the reasons I write about romance in the Amish community. The simple things are always so well appreciated. There are certainly no cell phones to distract them during courtship.
I hate to say it but I think the old art of romance is dead.
